-tvedt

Recently I visited the Telemark region of Norway, a large part of the southern central area. In the eastern part of Telemark one finds the homeland of the -tvedt given names: Hustvedt, Rortvedt, Aastvedt, Jøntvedt, Sneltvedt, Mustvedt, Hartvedt, Bjørntvedt, etc. Oh yes, and Hotvedt. -tvedt simply means "cultivated field". There are many variations on -tvedt, such as -tveit, -vet, and so on.

On the journey I came across this rock art (attached) which is about 3,000 years old---you can see how important ships might have been to whoever made it!
